Cheryl was born and educated
in Nottinghamshire and relentlessly requested singing lessons (even
sacrificing her idea of keeping a horse in the garden shed to have
them!) from an early age. Cheryl studied voice with the late Pamela
Cook, MBE and joined her world-renowned choir, Cantamus for the next
five years. Cheryl went on to study at Trinity College of Music,
London before travelling to Australia to join the Victoria State
Opera in Melbourne and performed in Cameron Macintosh’s ‘World Tour
of Carmen’ in Australisia in 1990.
Cheryl currently studies
with Margaret Kingsley and has performed many leading roles in the
soprano and mezzo-soprano repertoire including Violetta (La
Traviata); Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus); Countess (Marriage of
Figaro); Valencienne (Merry Widow); First Lady (Magic Flute); Suzuki
(Madam Butterfly); Zerlina (Don Giovanni) and many others. Cheryl
was extremely fortunate to have a role in Paul Dayton's much
acclaimed opera, The Hanging Oak based on a story by M. R James,
specifically written for her which premiered in October 2009 in
several church locations across the South West of England.
Cheryl is also a successful concert artist. In 1985 she performed
Mozart’s Mass in C Minor with Sir Simon Rattle and the Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra, and sang Mendelssohn's Elijah with Alan Opie in
2005. Other concert repertoire highlights include the Verdi Requiem,
Mozart Requiem, Handel Messiah, Bach Christmas Oratorio, Bach
Magnificat, Elgar The Kingdom, Charpentier’s Te Deum and Rossini’s
Petite Messe Solennelle.
Based in Cornwall, Cheryl regularly
performs throughout the South West in recitals, concerts, oratorio
and on the operatic stage. In addition, Cheryl also teaches voice
privately and for the Cornwall Music Service Trust as well as
lecturing at Falmouth University, running her own business, Find
Your Voice and her new venture, Intimate Opera Cornwall. Future
performances include: Opera Classics Gala with South Devon Choral in
Torquay on 6 July; Opera and Dinner evening for LINC Charity,
Cheltenham on 5 October; Opera evening at Old Bodmin Library on 26
October; Petite Messe Solennelle with Bude Choral Society on 30
November and many Christmas concerts.
